Episode 4: Fool’s Gold

Luke 12:13–21 Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.”  Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?” Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

How We Can Ask God To Free Us From The Foolishness Of Greed:

  1. Ask God to                                                in my life.

Matthew 22:37–38 Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

  2. Ask God to help me                                                more than                                                .
Matthew 22:39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Philippians 2:3–4 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

Matthew 6:20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.

  3. Ask God to give me the joy of                                                .
Acts 20:35 You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Luke 9:24 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

Episode 3: Angry Fools

Proverbs 14:29 People with understanding control their anger;

a hot temper shows great foolishness.

How God Says We Can Manage Our Anger:

  1.                                                to manage it.

Proverbs 29:11 Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.

  2.                                                the cost.
Proverbs 29:22 An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.

Proverbs 14:1 A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.

    Proverbs 14:17 Short-tempered people do foolish things…

  3.                                                before reacting.
James 1:19 You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

  4.                                                my anger appropriately.
Ephesians 4:26–27 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil… Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

  5.                                                my mind.
Romans 12:2 …Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Episode 2: The Fool’s Trap

Proverbs 1:10–14 My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them! They may say, “Come and join us. Let’s hide and kill someone! Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!  Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave; let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death. Think of the great things we’ll get! We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take. Come, throw in your lot with us; we’ll all share the loot.”  My child, don’t go along with them! Stay far away from their paths. They rush to commit evil deeds. They hurry to commit murder.  If a bird sees a trap being set, it knows to stay away. But these people set an ambush for themselves; they are trying to get themselves killed.

Proverbs 29:25 Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.

How To Avoid The Fool’s Trap:

  1. Fear                                                and find my                                                .

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

  2. Listen to                                                and choose my                                               .
Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

Proverbs 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

  3. Commit myself to                                                .
Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Episode 1: Foolish Hearts

Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”

Proverbs 1:29–33 For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord. They rejected my advice and paid no attention when I corrected them.  Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way, choking on their own schemes. For simpletons turn away from me—to death. Fools are destroyed by their own complacency. But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.”

How To Gain A Heart Of Wisdom And Escape The Life Of A Fool:

  1.                                                God.

Proverbs 1:7 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Romans 1:21–22 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.

  2.                                                of God.
Proverbs 2:1–6 My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.  For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

  3.                                                God.
James 1:5 If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.

  4.                                                God.
Proverbs 3:5–7 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.
